Product Recommendations at Checkout
How Checkout Recommendations Work
xBundle can show product recommendations to your customers during the checkout process, giving you one more opportunity to increase order value.
What are checkout recommendations?
After a customer adds items to their cart and proceeds to checkout, xBundle can display a section suggesting additional products they might like. These recommendations are powered by AI and are personalized based on what’s in the customer’s cart.
Where do they appear?
The recommendations show in the checkout UI, the page where customers fill in their shipping and payment details. The recommended products appear as a clean, non-intrusive section where customers pick a quantity and add the products to their order with a single Add to cart button.
How are products selected?
xBundle uses AI to analyze:
- What products are in the customer’s cart
- Which products in your store are most similar to those items (by product content)
It matches products using embeddings built from product titles, descriptions, product types, and tags, so the recommendations feel natural and relevant, not random. Products already in the cart, bundle placeholder products, and any products you’ve excluded are never recommended.
Configuring Checkout Recommendations
You can control how many products are recommended, which products are never recommended, and how discounts are applied in the checkout.
Accessing checkout recommendation settings:
- Go to Settings from the sidebar
- Open the Recommend products at checkout tab (the same sections also appear in the All tab)
Recommendation settings:
In the Checkout product recommendations card, click the pencil (edit) icon, change the values, then click Save:
- Count of product recommendations: How many products to display during checkout (1 to 10, default 1). More products give customers more options but can feel overwhelming.
- Number of times to show recommendations: The maximum number of times the recommendation section is shown per checkout session (1 to 100, default 1).
- Excluded products: Click Browse to pick products (and their variants) that should never be recommended at checkout, such as gift cards or made-to-order items.
A Reset to default button appears once you’ve changed any of these values.
Discount settings for checkout recommendations:
You can attach a special discount to the products recommended at checkout to make the offer more compelling:
Open the discount section
In the checkout recommendation settings, go to the Discount product recommendations section
Add and configure the discount
Click Add discount and configure the Discount name, Discount type and value. Optionally tick Enable rule-based discount to add conditions.
Save
Click Save. These settings apply globally to all checkout recommendations.
Things to know:
- The Discount name is the label customers see at checkout next to the saving. If left blank, checkout shows a default label instead (Bundle discount, Free gift, Gift discount or Free shipping).
- There is no time-limit or countdown option for checkout recommendation discounts. The offer simply applies while it is configured.
- With a Buy X Get Y discount, customers choose their gift items directly in the checkout section.
Global Product Recommendations
Global recommendations apply to the on-store Frequently Bought Together widget, not the checkout recommendation section. They are configured in Settings → All. The checkout recommendation engine selects products purely by product-similarity (embeddings) and does not use manual or global priority tiers.
Global recommendations let you choose products that are added as extra suggestions to every Frequently Bought Together widget across the store.
What are global recommendations?
You can hand-select up to 5 products to promote. They are appended to each Frequently Bought Together bundle’s recommendation list after the bundle’s own recommendations, so they fill any remaining slots in the widget.
- You’re launching a new product and want maximum visibility
- You have bestsellers that complement almost anything in your store
- You want to move specific inventory across your entire catalog
How to set them up:
Go to Settings
Go to Settings
Find Global recommendations
Find the Global recommendations section (marked with a “Priority 3” badge)
Enter edit mode
Click the pencil (edit) icon to enter edit mode
Add products
Click Add products (or Browse / Add more) to open the product picker and select up to 5 products
Review selections
Your selections show with product images, titles, prices, and inventory levels
Save
Click Save to apply
Managing global recommendations:
- Click the pencil (edit) icon to modify your selections
- Remove individual products from the list with the × next to each product
- Use the search bar in the product picker to find specific products quickly
- You can see each product’s price and inventory level to help you decide
Global recommendations are added to a Frequently Bought Together bundle’s widget when that bundle is saved, so after changing them, re-save any bundle you want to pick up the new list.
Priority explained:
The badges you see when building a Frequently Bought Together bundle rank the recommendation sources:
- Priority 1: Bundle-specific manual recommendations (set on individual FBT bundles)
- Priority 2: AI-generated automatic recommendations
- Priority 3: Your global recommendations
- Priority 4: Random (criteria-based) recommendations
In the storefront widget, the bundle’s own recommendations (manual, automatic and random, in the order they were saved) are shown first, and your global recommendations are appended last. The widget shows up to 7 recommended products, so global products only appear when the bundle’s own recommendations leave room.
