Discount Configuration
Discount Types Overview
xBundle supports four discount types that you can apply to any bundle. Choose the one that best fits your promotional strategy.
| Discount Type | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage | Takes a percentage off the bundle price | “Save 20% when you buy this bundle” |
| Fixed Amount | Subtracts a specific dollar amount from the price | “Save $15 on this bundle” |
| Buy X Get Y | Buying the bundle qualifies the customer to get gift items free or discounted | “Buy this bundle, get a gift item free” |
| Free Shipping | Removes shipping charges when the bundle is purchased | “Free shipping on this bundle” |
Where discounts appear:
- On the product page inside the bundle widget
- In the cart when the bundle products are added
- At checkout through Shopify’s discount system
What customers see at checkout:
The Discount name you give a discount is the label shown next to the saving at checkout, so choose something customer-friendly (for example “Summer Sale 20% Off”). If a discount has no name, checkout shows a default label instead: Bundle discount for a price reduction on the bundle, Free gift for a gift item that is 100% off, Gift discount for a partially discounted gift item, and Free shipping for a shipping discount.
Discount preview:
When creating or editing a bundle, a live Bundle Discounts Preview panel appears on the right side of the form. It shows how each saved discount is configured before you save the bundle: the discount type, value, and any conditions you’ve set.
Setting Up Discounts on Bundles
Each bundle has one discount attached (for multipacks, one discount per pack). Here’s how to set it up.
Adding a discount when creating a bundle:
Find the Configure discounts card
While creating or editing a bundle, find the Configure discounts card.
Click Add discount
Click Add discount.
Fill in the Discount configuration form
- Discount name: required and unique within the bundle; this is the label customers see at checkout
- Discount type: Percentage, Fixed Amount, Buy X Get Y, or Free Shipping
For Percentage discounts:
- Enter the Discount value as a percentage (greater than 0, up to 100%)
For Fixed Amount discounts:
- Enter the Discount value as the dollar amount to subtract
For Buy X Get Y discounts:
- Buying the bundle is what qualifies the customer; there is no separate “buy” product to select
- Set the Quantity of gift products the customer receives
- Under Customer gets, click Browse and select the gift/reward product(s)
- Set the Gift discount value (a percentage; 100% = free)
For Free Shipping discounts:
- Simply select Free Shipping, no additional value needed
Optionally, schedule the discount or add conditions
Tick Enable time-based discount to schedule the discount with a Start date and End date, and/or tick Enable rule-based discount to add conditions (see the next article).
Save
Click Save.
One discount per bundle:
Each bundle supports exactly one discount. Once you’ve added a discount, the Add discount button is hidden. To use a different discount, edit or remove the existing one first. (Multipack bundles have one discount per pack, so a multipack can effectively offer different pricing at each pack size.)
Editing a discount:
Click the pencil (edit) icon next to any saved discount to modify it. Your changes are saved when you save the bundle.
Removing a discount:
Click the trash (delete) icon next to the discount you want to remove.
Rule-Based Discounts
Discount rules let you control exactly when a discount is applied based on conditions. This gives you powerful control over your promotions.
What are discount rules?
Rules are conditions that must be met before a discount is applied. For example: “Only apply the 20% discount if the customer buys 3 or more items.”
Available condition types:
| Condition | What it checks | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Quantity | How many items the customer is buying (Minimum quantity, optional Maximum quantity) | “Must buy at least 3 items” |
| Cart Value | The subtotal of everything in the customer’s cart (Minimum purchase, optional Maximum purchase) | “Cart must be $100 or more” |
| Inventory | Stock levels of the products (Minimum stock, optional Maximum stock) | “Only when stock is above 50 units” |
Scheduling is not a rule condition
Scheduling a discount to a date range is set separately with the Enable time-based discount option on the discount itself (Start date and End date), not with one of the rule conditions above. Scheduled discounts are enforced at checkout: outside the date window the discount is simply not applied.
How to add rules:
Tick Enable rule-based discount
When configuring a discount, tick Enable rule-based discount.
Click Add condition
In the Rule-based discount conditions section, click Add condition.
Choose the Condition type
Choose the Condition type.
Fill in the condition's values
Fill in the condition’s values (for example Minimum quantity).
Optionally, negate the condition
Tick Negate this condition to apply the discount only when the condition is not met.
Add more conditions if needed
Each condition type can be used once per discount.
A rule-based discount needs at least one fully filled-in condition before the discount can be saved.
Combining rules, AND / OR:
Each condition after the first has its own Operator dropdown, so you choose how it joins the previous one:
- AND: both conditions must be true for the discount to apply
- OR: either condition is enough
Drag a condition’s handle to reorder it; the number badge shows the order in which conditions are evaluated.
Multipack Discounts
Each Multipack pack has one discount. The quantity required for a pack is set by the pack’s own Min quantity field, not by discount tiers.
How it works:
- A pack requires exactly one discount.
- The discount can be Percentage, Fixed Amount, Free Shipping, or Buy X Get Y.
- The Min quantity you set on the pack determines how many items the customer must buy for that pack’s pricing to apply.
- You can create several packs (e.g. a 2-pack and a 5-pack), each with its own min quantity and its own discount, to build volume pricing.
- Tick Mark as most popular on one pack’s discount to highlight it; that pack is pre-selected when customers view the product. If you don’t mark one, the widget pre-selects the smallest pack, and when you offer three or more packs the second-smallest pack is automatically highlighted as the most popular.
Example, volume pricing with multiple packs:
| Pack | Min quantity | Discount |
|---|---|---|
| 2-pack | 2 | 10% off |
| 3-pack | 3 | 15% off |
| 5-pack | 5 | 25% off |
Tips:
- Start with a small discount and increase it on larger packs to motivate bigger orders
- 2 or 3 packs is usually the sweet spot; more than that gets confusing
Understanding the Discount Preview
The Bundle Discounts Preview is a live panel that shows you exactly how your discount configuration will look and work before you save.
Where to find it:
When creating or editing any bundle type, the preview appears as a sticky panel on the right side of the form. It updates as you save changes to a discount.
What the preview shows:
- Discount name with a type icon and a value badge (for example “20%”), plus a Rule-Based badge when conditions are set
- Type and Value; for Buy X Get Y, also the number of Gift products and Selectable gifts
- Show Rules: expands the conditions attached to a rule-based discount
- A footer with Total Discounts and how many are Rule-Based
The preview is a read-only summary. It does not show validation warnings.
Validation checks (shown on the form, not the preview):
When you save, xBundle validates your discount and shows any errors inline on the discount fields (and a banner), for example:
- A Discount name is required and must be unique within the bundle
- Discount value must be greater than 0 (except for Free Shipping)
- Percentage discounts, and the gift discount value on Buy X Get Y, cannot exceed 100%
- Buy X Get Y needs a Quantity of gift products and at least one gift product
- Rule-based discounts need at least one fully filled-in condition
- Time-based discounts need a Start date and an End date that comes after it
How to use it:
Use the preview to confirm your discount reads the way you intend. If saving is blocked, fix the highlighted field errors shown on the form.
